GWP's History Written By Grant Peeling
We moved to Moose Jaw on June 17, 1989. In July of that year, Oscar Mossing asked if I would become a Pest Control Officer (PCO) for RMs 161 and 162. I was officially appointed in September 1989.
In June 1995, Oscar was selling mainly two products throughout District 8 and was getting ready to retire, so I decided to take over.
First, we needed a name for the business. We came up with three different names, but they were all rejected twice! Finally, on the third try, the government accepted GWP Rodent Products.
On January 1, 1996, we officially took over selling bait to rural municipalities. I spent that winter travelling around the province, visiting RMs and meeting with many different councils to introduce the business and our products.
By 2000, the business was growing, and Wilma also started going on the road making deliveries. We initially had a Ford Ranger, but it quickly became too small for what we needed, so we upgraded to a full-size Ford F-150.
In the beginning, we had enough room to store three pallets of product at Keon Gardens. As the business grew, we needed more space. We could also only access the warehouse when Keon Gardens was open, so eventually we moved our product to rooms 27 and 30 at the trailer court. As we continued to grow, we rented a storage unit as well, which meant we had product stored in two different locations.
At that time, we would take advantage of the January sales and bring in a semi-load of product—27 pallets at a time.
As the business continued to expand, storage remained a challenge. When Richard took over the business, he built a shed, which finally took care of the space problem.
In 2008, having known Richard Zaremba all his life, I asked him to come and work for us. It worked out very well, and before long, we had three trucks on the road making deliveries.
In January 2010, Richard purchased GWP Rodent Products from us and took over the business.
After Richard passed away, Ashley and Joanne took over GWP Rodent Products, and they continue to run the business today.
It is with a lot of pride and satisfaction that I look back at where it all began. What started as an idea grew year after year into the business GWP Rodent Products is today.
